Dates
Phoenix dactylifera that is commonly known as date or date palm is a flowering plant species of the palm family, Arecaceae, and has edible sweet fruit. These are widely cultivated and are found naturally in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
Structure

Date trees normally reach about 70–75 feet (21–23 m) in height, growing singly or forming a clump having many stems from a single root system. The single leaf is 4–6 meters (13–20 ft) long, with spines on it and having about 150 leaflets. The leaflets are 30 cm (12 in) long and 2 cm (0.79 in) wide. The full span of the crown ranges from 6–10 m (20–33 ft).
History of Dates

Dates have been used as a food in the Middle East and the Indus valley for hundreds of years. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in Arabia in 6000 BC. Dates are believed to be originated from Iraq around 4000 BC.
The ancient Egyptians used the date to make date wine.There is one another archaeological evidence of its cultivation in Pakistan around 7000 BC. After that, it was continuously cultivated in the Indus valley.Afterward, traders spread it around North Africa, Asia, and Spain. Dates were introduced into Mexico and California by the Spaniards in 1765 AD.
Famous Varieties of Dates
There are so many varieties found on the earth. The most famous are:
v  Aabel – it is very common in Libya.
v  Ajwah – it is very common in the town of Medina in Saudi Arabia, it is the subject of a hadith, treatment for many diseases.
v  Al-Khunaizi – it is very common in the town of Qatif in Saudi Arabia.
v  Amir Hajj or Amer Hajj – it is very common in Iraq, these are very soft with a thin skin and thick flesh,
v  Abid Rahimʿ  (Arabic: عبد رحيم‎‎) – from Sudan. In Nigeria. it is also called Dabino and is commonly used by Nigerian Muslims to break their Ramadan fast.
v  Barakawi (Arabic: بركاوي‎‎) – it is very common in Sudan.
v  Barhee or barhi (from Arabic word barh,meaning "a hot wind") – these are almost spherical, light amber to dark brown when ripe; soft, with thick flesh and rich flavor.
v  Dabbas – it is very common in the United Arab Emirates.
v  Datca- it is very common in turkey.
v  Deglet Noor ( Arabicدڨلة نور )- so named because the center appears light or golden when held up to the sun. This is a leading date in Libya, Algeria. U.S.A..
v  Fardh or Fard – common in Oman, deep dark brown, tender skin, sweet flavor, small seed. Keeps well when well packed.
v  Ftimi or Alligue – these are grown in inland oases of Tunisia.
v  Holwah  (Arabic for sweet) – these are soft and extremely sweet, small to medium in size.
v  Haleema – found in Libya.
v  Hayany (Hayani) – found in Egypt
v  Honey –is also famous as Honey dates all around the world because of its taste, and high moisture content.
v  Iteema – common in Algeria.
v  Kenta – common in Tunisia.
v  Khalas Maktoom (Arabic for hidden) – this is a large, red-brown, thick-skinned, soft, medium-sweet date.
v  Khalasah (Arabic for quintessence) – one of the most famous palm variety in Saudi Arabia, famous for its sweetness level that is medium thus, suits most people.
v  Khastawi – this is the leading soft date in Iraq; it is syrupy and small in size, prized for dessert.
v  Khenaizi – from the United Arab Emirates.
v  Lulu – from the United Arab Emirates.
v  Medjool or (Majdool) (Arabic: مجدول‎‎) – from Morocco, also grown in the United States,Israel,Saudi Arabia.Jordan, and Palestinian Territories.
v  Migraf (Mejraf) – very popular in Southern Yemen, these are large, golden-amber dates.
v  Nabtat-seyf – in Saudi Arabia.
v  Rotab (Arabic: رطب) – from Saudi Arabia, they are dark and soft.
v  Sag‘ai – from Saudi Arabia.
v  (Saidi) – soft, very sweet, these are popular in Libya.
v   (Sayir) (Arabic for common) – these dates are dark orange-brown, of medium size, soft and syrupy.
v  Sukkary – (lit. sugary) (Arabic: سكري) Dark brown skin; distinctly sweet and soft flesh, from Saudi Arabia (Qassim), it is the most expensive kind.
v  Sellaj – (Arabic: سلّج‎‎) in Saudi Arabia.
v  Tagyat – common in Libya.
v  Tamej – in Libya.
v  Thoory (Thuri) – popular in Algeria, this dry date is brown-red when cured with a bluish bloom and very wrinkled skin. Its flesh is sometimes hard and brittle but the flavor described as sweet and nutty.
v  Umeljwary  in Libya.
v  Umelkhashab – Brilliant red skin; bittersweet, hard white flesh (Saudi Arabia).
v  Zahidi (Arabic for [Of the] ascetic) – medium size, cylindrical, light golden-brown semi-dry dates are very sugary and sold as soft, medium-hard and hard.
v  Zaghloul (Arabic: زغلول‎‎) – Dark red skin, long, and very crunchy when fresh (when they are typically served); extremely sweet, with sugar content creating a sense of desiccation in the mouth when eaten. The variety is essentially exclusive to Egypt.

Dates provide a wide range of essential nutrients and are a very good source of dietary potassium. The sugar content of ripe dates is about 80%; the remainder consists of protein, fiber, and trace elements including zinc, copper, iron, boron, cobalt, fluorine, magnesium manganese, and selenium.It also contains vitamins like thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, Folate, Vitamin A, and K.
